A language autobiography

Since I’m from Saudi arabia, Arabic plays a big part of my life. It’s a part of my identity. When I talk in Arabic, I feel home.

Today I’ll be talking about English. English holds a special place in my heart because it’s the language that enabled me to learn so much about the world and meet new people. I first started learning about English when I was in first class back in Saudi Arabia, it was one of the compulsory subjects. Back in Saudi Arabia, English at that stage stopped at ABCs, apple and banana.

Ireland for anyone interested. It’s a very cold and green place.

It wasn’t until I went to Ireland due to my father’s work that I started to actually progress in the language. When I first arrived, in school, I had to use body language to get them understand me because of my limited English vocabulary. I would literally bring a dictionary everyday just to talk with people. I thought most would stop talking to me since I can’t talk. But thankfully, I have met good people that understood that I am not fluent and are willing to help. Even though we did have a couple of arguments here and there due to miscommunication, I can confidently say that overall they’re great. I lived in Ireland for 4 years, those years improved my English so fast because I had to do it. I didn’t have the luxury to the only talk in English when I want to. Nobody in school knew Arabic so it’s either embarrass myself but still learn or just be a loner. Back then I loved talking so I think you can guess the answer.

Even though, that way of learning has helped in learning. It’s inevitable to say that I have also lost confidence in the way. It was hard to talk and have people laughing at you, I used to laugh with them to save me some face.

But once you accept your weaknesses and strengths but still reflect and try to improve, I can assure you that English will come to you easily.

Thank you for reading my blog! I’ll try to update more frequently so please do not give up on me yet.

Have a great day ~~
